Solar powered Pesticide Sprayer

We have discussed lots of agricultural projects on this blog.This post is part of that series. Farming is one of the most oldest and important business ever done by humans but in most parts of the world it is done in traditional way. Though, farmers are adapting to changing times but their are many more things that's need to be done.

Why ?
At present time we use Power sprayer in two stroke petrol engine which pollutes our environment. It requires regular maintenance and filter cleaning regularly. It costs around Rs.70 / hr or $ 0.96 / hr. As demand of energy increasing, its cost is increasing too.  As we have seen example of Tractors, Motors electrical pump, Technology is being useful for improving production

How to build this project?
Their are two ways you can do it. First one is from the scratch where we build each and everything ourselves and learn basics of motor, blower and solar power technology and second way is where we avoid reinventing the wheel instead of that focus on our task in hand which is building pesticide sprayer which runs with the help of solar power.

How ?
First method:
Prepare design of your sprayer using computer aided tool( CAD). You will require following materials for building this project:
Solar Panel Battery
Blower 
DC Motor 
Adjusting 
Screw 
Connecting wires 

Second method:
You will need 82 W 12 V electric motor of around 1kg weight. Connect this motor with Li-ion battery which is further connected with solar panel. It would cost you around Rs.70 / hour which is at par with petrol powered sprayer.

Spherical Solar Energy Cells

The biggest hurdle in the use of clean energy is their costing which is far more than traditional sources. We at Projectideasblog.com always try to bring you information about the latest technologies and innovation and this article is one of those posts where we will not discuss about idea but technology which in future has potential to change our lives.Scientist around the world are working day and night to make it cost effective.Batteries and Material cost are two main reasons for its high production cost. We can bring down its cost in two ways; first by reducing the price of storage that we discussed in our last post and second by improving the efficiency which we are discussing today.

Today we will discuss about the new solar cell developed by Barcelona scientist Andre Broessel which can significantly improve the efficiency of existing cells. It is with solar energy is its low efficiency. German Architect Andre experiment seems to be solution of this problem and it would improve its efficiency by 35 percent.It is based on the concept of focusing sunlight to one point. Founder of this technology claims that it will not only improve efficiency of solar power plant but also produce electricity when sunlight is not widely available i.e. night.Moreover with the help of spherical cells we can produce solar power 24x7 which is itself a revolution and launchpad for future ideas to blossom.

Solar Powered Bag

From last few years phones are getting smart, Laptops are becoming Tablets and CD Players are becoming iPods. All these changes make us more dependent on electronic devices than ever. Though these devices keep us connected, but when battery runs out they become liability. That makes battery charging one of the most important needs of today’s world.
In my post mobile charger using bicycle, I discussed how we can charge our battery while riding on a bike. Today we will discuss about Solar powered Bag which is not only useful and handy but uses green technology too. Solar bag consists of skinny film solar cells and batteries. It contains a flexible mono crystalline solar panel, battery, charge controller, plugs, cords and light bulbs. It provides users with power up to 120 watt-hours/day, capable of powering electronic equipment's rated up to 300 W.

What is Monocrystalline solar Panel?
Monocrystalline silicon is the base material of the electronic industry. It consists of silicon in which the crystal lattice of the entire solid is continuous, unbroken (with no grain boundaries) to its edges. It can be prepared intrinsic, i.e. made of exceedingly pure silicon alone, or doped, containing very small quantities of other elements added to change in a controlled manner its semiconducting properties.

How it works?

The solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which is stored in the batteries and can be used to power portable electronic appliances like mobile phones and mp3 players.

  • Solar backpacks are light-weight, hence making it easier to carry. 
  • Flexible solar panels also are light and portable, as well as waterproof. 
  • Backpack allows patients to carry medical devices with them.

Solar Energy Project Ideas

Solar energy is a form of energy which is widely available in abundance and have many different uses. Energy provided by sun in 1 hour, if measured; is equivalent to energy consumed on earth in one whole year. And for this reason, their is ample opportunity to work and use this energy in comparison to any other form.

It is radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times from drying clothes to generating electricity using a range of ever-evolving technologies.
Though it has many uses,but we often this energy as solar power, which is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP) with the help of lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam.

Solar Powered Motor

This project has 12V DC water pump,12V 7ah battery that was charged by my 6.5 watt solar cell and was able to pump water. This system seems to work really well.



Solar Water Heater

We can save large amount of electricity if we start using solar water heater at the place of traditional heaters. If we implement it using cogeneration, it would be really effective.

How Solar Car Works ?

Solar energy is one of my favorite topics because though its working is easy to understand but ideas related to this topic are very useful for our future energy needs.

Concept : Generally they work on this concept:

Solar Energy --->Solar Panel---> Electricity--->Machine(Grinder, Juicer, Mobile Charger, Bag etc.) or Storage(Battery)
Solar Energy-->Heat-->Cooking, Boiling, Water Filter etc .

Important thing to consider in your assignment is that how you can improve its efficiency either for boiling purpose or for heating. For ex.  Recently discussed Spherical cell concentrate more sun light at one place and therefore generates more power similarly scientist have found out that nano solar cells are more flexible and more efficient than any other cell available.

Solar Compressor:
You can build something which gets its power from Sun Energy. For e.g., power your AC of a small room using compressor which get its power from solar panel.Such as Solar Powered Air Conditioner
In this example, it is a small room. Half ton capacity will be sufficient. You will need at least kWh/24 hours. This may require 10 to 12 square meter solar panel plus battery and inverter.

Produce Fuel using Solar Energy

Scientists around the world are working towards the goal of developing technologies to harness energy from the sun to produce fuels for transport, industry and electricity generation. Fuels produced using solar energy would transform our future energy options by providing an alternative to fossil fuels.Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and solar architecture, which can make considerable contributions to solving some of the most urgent problems the world now faces.We all know about the ever growing energy needs of our world.

 If we can use it to produce fuel , it would be milestone for us and for our future generation. Many researches around the world are working on this project.


Our Objective:

To produce synthetic gas which can be used with our currently available infrastructure.This project should have the potential not only to be completely renewable, but to produce a minimal carbon footprint.

Concept:
It can be done using process known as a two-step solar thermochemical cycle, which involves using concentrated sunlight to heat a metal oxide and split it into metal and oxygen.  The resulting metal is then reacted with carbon dioxide and water, producing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, or synthesis gas, which can be used to make diesel fuel and other synthetic fuels.

Procedure:


The process begins with a solar simulator in the form of seven mirrored, 6,500-watt lamps that concentrate the light on a 10-centimeter spot with an irradiance of 3,000 suns. With this concentrated radiant energy, one can generate temperatures of more than 3,600 F in a chemical reactor. There, carbon dioxide and water are split to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the two components of synthetic gas.The key to the technology rests with oxides of two metals: zinc and cerium which allow us to split water and carbon dioxide at temperatures achievable with modern solar concentrating devices.

Solar powered remote controlled aircraft

In  December 17, 1903  when Wright brothers build first aircraft,it became discovery, that changed the world completely.They build fixed wing aircraft which is capable of flight using wings that generate lift due to the vehicle's forward airspeed and the shape of the wings.In last century though, everything improved from design of aircraft, fuel efficiency and power of engine but aircraft fuel which is most important has not changed and become leading cause of global warming.

Why?
If you read airplane history, you would find that human need and desire of flying is more powerful than flying with renewable energy.So, focus in last century was only on designing and improving efficiency of engine and not on changing its fuel.

So , Why now?
In last decade, awareness of general public about climate change has increase significantly. With this awareness and fuel price that are rising at rocket speed creates catastrophic effect, which pressurizes us to think about alternate fuel for aircraft and one of these alternates is Solar Energy, which we are going to discuss today.

Is it possible?

Yes it is, recently Swiss made Solar Powered Plane, Solar Impulse completed its 4000 miles journey between Europe and Africa successfully. You can read more about it at news website msnbc.


What's the need of building solar powered RC planes?

When we think of building our plane, we know that because of financial and knowledge constraint we can only build models and small planes as our engineering project. We already discussed about RC planes in Aeronautical Projects Post . Solar Powered RC Plane is extension of that post.
Most of you know that planes are the biggest polluter of the world. In a series of steps we need to tackle global warming , solar rc planes could be vital.

Solar powered water purification system

Waterborne diseases have significant contribution in total number of diseases around the world. Most of the developing countries governments around the world are still struggling to provide clean water to their people.This problem is much more severe in some parts of Africa.

Today we will discuss how we can use solar energy to purify water. This would be great project not only for you as your engineering project but people whom life will change by your effort.
In my research I found that it is extremely difficult to make water completely clean.Even, if we heat water to 100 degree Celsius(212 Fahrenheit), some bacteria's would survive till 118 degree Celsius(244.4 F).Thus we would try to filter as much as we can using sun energy to make it less harmful.

Sodis: Solar water disinfection is one of the most easiest method of water filtration. You just need to fill clean plastic bottles with water(somewhat filtered with traditional method like sand) and expose these bottles to direct sunlight from 6 hours to 2 days (depending upon the condition). Water will get mostly disinfected.



Solar Water Purifier: It uses the concept natural fiteration of evaporation and condensation. When water gets heated with sunlight, it starts converting into water vapor which later condensed to get pure drinking water.

3D Solar Cells

We all know that popular conventional energy resources  such as oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear power are accompanied by problems of air and water pollution, resource depletion and the greenhouse effect, all of which are becoming increasingly unacceptable and difficult to afford. In the 21st century PV (Solar Energy) can potentially meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity with minimal environmental consequence.

Despite being one of the best alternative , solar energy is far behind from coal and nuclear energy in terms of market share. Moreover, it is costlier and less efficient   than its counterparts.To improve its efficiency and reducing cost, we should move towards advanced solar cells such as 3 dimensional.


 Three-dimensional solar cells that capture nearly all of the light that strikes them and could boost the efficiency of photovoltaic systems while reducing their size, weight and mechanical complexity. The new 3D solar cells, created at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, capture photons from sunlight using an array of miniature “tower” structures that resemble high-rise buildings in a city street grid.

This idea of 3D Cell is of William Yuan is a freshman from Beaverton, Oregon.Yuan has developed a 3D solar cell that has the potential to revolutionize solar power.At the heart of Yuan's project is a solar cell that can harness both visible and ultraviolet light.Yuan's solar cells are calculated to absorb about five hundred times more light then a conventional solar cell and nine times more than advanced 3D solar cells.

Solar Powered Air Conditoner


Air conditioners are both cause and solution of global warming, due to rise in temperature in recent years, it becomes necessary for each one of us to have air conditioner. It has become very important part of our life in recent years. The only problem is that it consumes great amount of electricity which results is more global warming.

One of the best solution of above problem is air conditioner which do not use electricity generated by pollution generating fuel, instead use something renewable and unconventional. One of the example for that is Solar Powered Air conditioner which takes its power from solar.Solar air conditioning refers to any air conditioning (cooling) system that uses solar power.

This project is part of solar project ideas and can be used by students of Mechanical  or Electronics engineering. Even students of Physics would find it interesting.If this project is implemented with Passive Solar Design , it would be more effective.

Sun Tracker Project

Solar energy is the most powerful resource that can be used to generate power. So far the efficiency of generating power of solar energy is relatively low. Thus, how to increase the efficiency of generating power of solar energy is very important.

According to Wiki A solar tracker is a generic term used to describe devices that orient various payloads toward the sun. Payloads can be photovoltaic panels, reflectors, lenses or other optical devices.It is used to minimize the angle of incidence between the incoming light and a photo voltaic panel. This increases the amount of energy produced from a fixed amount of installed power generating capacity.

This project idea is for students of Mechanical and Electronics engineering. Moreover , students of MIT have won prize for the same.Cleveland State University students has done project on sun tracker in 2008.
